Creating Safe and Sex- Positive Dialogues
for Adults through Philosophy

In our workshops, we attmpt not only to address the timely issues related to SRHR in Japanese society, but also to apply the opinions and requests from the previous participants (e.g. mutual consent, masturbation, access to abortion, contraceptive methods, and male circumcisions). During the workshop, we lead them to have philosophical dialogue session where participants can share their concerns and inquiries both openly and safely.

Workshop Example (the 2nd workshop of Sexology Project):

Theme: Rethink self-pleasure in a perspective of sexual health/rights

The aim of workshop:

So much of negativity and stigma are around the topic of touching oneself for a pleasure in Japan mainly among women but also among men. The language surrounding the area also connotes negativity and shame. We wanted to raise positive feelings and knowledge about touching oneself and the importance of it for your sexual health and autonomy. We had two objectives to achieve. Firstly, to rethink and redefine the concept of masturbation by introducing a sex-positive term ‘Self-pleasure’ and by offering sex toy workshop. Secondly, to familiarise and educate ourselves to the concept of sexual health/rights.

We made a welcoming atmosphere by choosing a location that is a cozy space with no table where you sit on a cushion with a drink and snacks.

EXAMPLE:

Our 2nd Workshop Programmes

Lecture (40 mins):

-Sexual health/rights, the historical stigmatization and contemporary view of self-pleasure in Japan

Sex toy workshop (40 mins):

-Our guest speaker gives a show and tell about sex toy and how to use them with an actual presentation of sex toys

-The participants have a chance to touch the product and feel it on their hands

-By displaying sex toys openly, the feeling of shame and embarrassment was removed, therefore, the participants could enjoy touching the products

Dialogue workshop (50 mins):

-The method of 'Philosophy for Children (p4c)' was applied

-Sharing thoughts and listening to other’s opinion about self-pleasure
